Oak Harbor, WA — A familiar face is a breath of fresh air in the race for Island County Commissioner District 2.  Jill Johnson, Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, announced today she is running for Island County Commissioner as a Republican.  

“I grew up in Island County and look forward to giving back and serving the people of Oak Harbor and all of Island County,” Johnson stated.  “I believe that we need local leadership to tackle the challenges the County is facing, someone who knows our communities and understands our values.” 

Johnson is a vocal advocate for local businesses and policies that promote and encourage job growth.    

“Island County is a beautiful place to live, but it’s time to be more vigilant in the protection of our local economies,” she stated. “We need to do all we can to continue to support NAS Whidbey and ensure the continued mission of the base, but we also need to look outward to broaden our economy and increase other employment opportunities on our Islands.” 

As the only candidate in the race who does not currently hold public office, Democrat Angie Homola currently holds the position, and Oak Harbor City Councilman Jim Campbell has also announced his candidacy, Johnson is encouraged by the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to the Commission. 

“The bickering that has bogged down local politics is a disservice to the people of Island County. It’s time we elect leaders who care less about partisan politics and personal agendas and more about the everyday needs of the people they serve,” Johnson said.  

The current legal appeal between the city of Oak Harbor and Island County over the urban growth area is one example of taxpayers footing the bill for politician’s inability to work cooperatively, Johnson said.  

Johnson has extensive local involvement.  She has volunteered on multiple school bonds and levies including the new Wildcat Memorial Stadium and the recently renovated Oak Harbor High School.   

In 2010 she was awarded the Admiral Jim Symonds “Friend of the Navy” Award and was recognized by the American Planning Association in the Implementation Category for her involvement with the City of Oak Harbor’s Windjammer program in 2009.  Johnson was recognized as the Best Community Volunteer in 2006 and received an award from the Oak Harbor Education Foundation for her outstanding contribution to the local youth, schools and community that same year.  She and her husband, Alexander Pfeiffer,  reside in Oak Harbor. 

“I am passionate about Island County, and I am excited about this opportunity to really make a difference, she said. “I want our Islands to be a place people want to live, to do business, to shop, to vacation, to raise a family, and to retire. There is no reason we can’t have it all.”
